Take a Break From Sitting and Improve Your Health

 

Even if you exercise for an hour or so every day, your activity level for the rest of the time is also critical to your health. For many of us, a brisk walk around the block or 45 minutes at the gym simply does not make up for sitting for a good portion of the day. Sitting for long periods of time is not contributing to good health, even if you exercise regularly. Why is sitting so bad for us and what can you do to incorporate more movement into your day?

According to an article in NutritionAction.com, researcher Genevieve Healy from the University of Queensland in Australia tracked more than 123,000 adults for 14 years, and discovered a higher risk of premature death in people who sat continually for six hours a day or more compared to people who sat for less than three hours. This risk of premature death in the sitting group of participants was true even in those who exercised on a regular basis. Healy explained why sitting is so bad for us. “The large postural muscles of your legs and back are not contracting while you’re sitting,”, noted Healy. She explained that fewer muscle contractions means that sugars and fats take longer to be cleared from the bloodstream, and “they’re more likely to be stored as body fat or to clog arteries.”

Healy’s research found that taking breaks from long periods of sitting can really make a difference. Nineteen overweight adult participants were instructed to sit for two hours, drink a liquid meal of 765 calories, and and then sit for another five hours. One day, they sat still for the entire five hour period. On other days, they stood up every 20 minutes and walked on a treadmill at a mild to moderate pace of 2 to 3 miles per hour.

When the results of sitting without a break or walking on the treadmill were compared, the treadmill users lowered their insulin and blood sugar levels by 25 percent. Study results were documented in Diabetes Care 35:946,2012.

Simply standing up more often could help improve your health. The trick is to break up long stretches of sitting at a desk or in front of the TV with standing up and moving around more. Researchers advise us to get up and move at least every 30 minutes, and to add more movement and activity to our days.

Less sitting and more activity can translate into better Health, so do yourself a favor and get up out of that chair!

Meditation – Your Path To Calm, Peacefulness, and Success

You hear the word meditation and immediately your mind flashes to images of incense and candles, sitting cross-legged on a cushion, repeating the word — sound — ohmmm mmmm.

Finding a bit of peace and calm in your crazy life sounds good, but isn’t meditation just a bit, well, odd?

Actually, not so much. It’s time to explore the benefits of meditation because they are numerous.

Busting Meditation Myths

It might surprise you to learn that meditating doesn’t require you to sit on a special cushion. Or any other particular piece of furniture, for that matter. But you can, if you like, of course.

You can meditate almost anywhere, and at any time. There’s no need for anything special to make it work.

Sit on a couch, on a chair. Lay down on the floor or a bed or sofa. Even under a tree, if that strikes your fancy.

The main thing is that you carve out anywhere from as little as five minutes to as much as 20, with your phone turned off, away from potential distractions.

And the benefits of doing this, on a daily basis, will surprise you. And sneak up on you.

And I don’t know about you, but if these successful people credit meditation as a big component of the reason for their success, then that’s good enough for me.

But the truth is, there are many incredible benefits to meditation. And adding a daily meditation period to each day will prove to be well worth it to you over time.

Calm is one such app you might want to investigate. You can choose to relax with timed sessions from five minutes up to 20 minutes, or select one of the guided meditations. The app is free, with the option to upgrade.

Apps such as Calm offer an excellent way to begin your daily meditation routine effortlessly.

Or you can simply set a timer and sit quietly for a set amount of time, eyes closed, breathing comfortably. There’s no need to recite a mantra, though if it helps to keep you focused, go for it.

If you use your mobile phone to time your session, be sure to switch to airplane mode and chose a pleasant sound to alert you when the time is up.

Your breathing should be calm, not forced or monitored in any way.

Let your mind wander, if you like. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it can be a plus. You never know where an untethered mind might lead.

Do your best to push aside any nagging thoughts of obligations and chores awaiting you.

Taking a few quiet moments of calm in your busy day will make it that much easier to tackle those tasks later on.

Creating a Vision Board: More than cut + paste

 

A Vision Board is a visual, pictorial representation of your desired goal. It is a finished product of an intuitive process: sifting through multiple images and bold phrases in various media, either paper magazines or digitally, grabbing the pictures that resonate with you, and pasting them down in a collage that gives you strength and positive thinking as you meditate on those goals.

Making a vision board work for you, however, is more than the simple exercise of cutting and pasting pretty pictures and encouraging words. Once you have realized your goal by this process of creative visualization, you will also need to imagine the steps involved in reaching those goals. Creating a focused image of your aspirations is a great place to start, but it is not enough to concoct a fantasy and believe that you can attain it by positive energy and faith alone. You also need to prepare yourself for the hard work and the possible forces working against you.

For example, if you were trying to lose weight and get in great physical shape, you would start by visualizing yourself at a healthy weight, looking trim and toned, similar to a model on your vision board. Then you would make a reasonable plan of diet and exercise, setting reachable goals and ways to reward yourself along the way. You would also need to devise a plan to ward off the inevitable temptations, to put in place mental pictures and helpful hints to refer to in times of discouragement.

Then, with your confidence raised and your goals clearly in place, you are ready to negotiate those obstacles while still keeping your eyes on the prize.

So go ahead, pull out the scissors and glue, the magazines or computer for either your paper or digital Vision Board. But be sure to follow it up with visions of the steps you will take to achieve your goals.

What is wellness?

There’s No Such Thing As Overnight Success

Overnight success. Can it happen? Does it ever happen?

When you see someone who is wildly successful, seemingly overnight, do you think that success came easy?

Probably not. But appearances can be deceiving.

The Long Road To Overnight Success

According to the quote I share in this video, it takes, on average, 15 years to reach overnight success. Kind of an oxymoron, isn’t it?

And what a relief it is, right? Everyone, not just you, struggled long and hard to reach “overnight” success. You just don’t see the struggles along the way.

That path to success contained challenges, obstacles, frustrations, do-overs, and many other potential setbacks.

On The Road

Think about your life, your goals and dreams. How many times have you started down a path, only to find along the way that your focus, your interest level, even your once-burning desire has changed? My guess is that it’s happened more often than not.

And that’s the best part of your journey toward success. No matter where you started, the experiences and personal growth that happen along the way is the best part of the ride. It’s then that you discover what matters most to you and discard what no longer fits.

Obstacles encountered on the way to success reveal how deep your desire goes. Finding yourself easily sidetracked is a sign you may need to refocus and change direction.

If you’re willing to fight your way through the challenges, no matter how hard they may be, you’ll know you’re on the right path.

The Road To Success — Where The Riches Lie

Now, you may be thinking that the road to success is hard and unpleasant, something you’ll want to struggle through as quickly as possible so you can reach your dreams and goals.

But that’s the wrong way to look at it.

The truth is, it’s those very experiences, the friendships and bonds you cultivate that enrich your life, long before you reach your goal.

Follow A Plan, But Be Willing To Make Corrections

What do you want to achieve? What are your life goals? What is your definition of success?

That first step toward success is often the hardest. When you over-anticipate and fear all that might go wrong, you may not ever take that first step.

But once you’ve begun, you’ll tackle the challenges as they come and find your way past the obstacles you encounter.

You might, however, change course. Maybe you’ll rethink what your version of success means.

You’ll course correct.

And all of these maneuvers take time. But that’s okay. Because time is going to pass no matter what.

Your overnight success is out there. It may take you a while to get there.

It may even take 15 years.

But every step is its own success. Don’t worry about how quickly others reach success. You know the truth. Their success was a long time coming.

Because there’s no such thing as an overnight success.
